Social Anxiety

For people with social anxiety disorder, everyday social interactions cause irrational anxiety, fear, self-consciousness and embarrassment. 

 
Symptoms may include excessive fear of situations in which one may be judged, worry about embarrassment or humiliation or concern about offending someone. Talk therapy and antidepressants can help increase confidence and improve ability to interact with others.
 
If you have social anxiety disorder, though, the stress of these situations is too much to handle. You might avoid all social contact because things that other people consider “normal” – like making small talk and eye contact – make you so uncomfortable. All aspects of your life, not just the social, could start to fall apart.
