Compassion literally means “to suffer together.” It is defined as the feeling that arises when you are confronted with another’s suffering and feel motivated to relieve that suffering. Compassion is not the same as empathy or altruism, though the concepts are related.

Here is a sample hypnotherapy script for developing more compassion:

Induction

“Welcome to this hypnotherapy session, where you’ll learn to develop more compassion in your life. Find a comfortable position, either sitting or lying down, and take a deep breath in through your nose and out through your mouth.

Imagine yourself standing in a peaceful, relaxing place. It could be a beach, a forest, or a mountain meadow. Allow yourself to fully immerse in this scene, taking in the sights, sounds, and sensations.

As you breathe in, imagine fresh, calm air filling your lungs. As you breathe out, imagine any tension, anxiety, or stress leaving your body. Repeat this process several times, allowing yourself to relax more with each breath.

Deepening

“Now, I’d like you to imagine a gentle, soothing warmth spreading through your body, starting at the crown of your head and flowing down to your toes. As this warmth spreads, it’s calming your mind, relaxing your body, and quieting your nervous system.

Imagine yourself becoming heavier, more relaxed, and more calm with each breath. Your eyelids are growing heavy, and your body is feeling more and more relaxed.

Compassion

“Now, I want you to focus on the quality of compassion. Imagine compassion growing within you, filling your heart and mind with warmth, empathy, and understanding.

Imagine yourself being kind, caring, and understanding towards others. Imagine yourself feeling a deep sense of connection and empathy with all living beings.

Visualization

“Imagine yourself in a scenario where you’re showing compassion to someone in need. It could be a friend, family member, or even a stranger.

Imagine yourself being present, attentive, and caring towards this person. Imagine yourself listening to their concerns, offering words of comfort and support, and providing physical or emotional comfort as needed.

Counting and Awakening

“As you continue to relax and visualize yourself showing compassion to others, I’ll count from five to one, and when I reach one, you’ll slowly open your eyes, feeling refreshed, renewed, and ready to take on your day.

Five… your body is relaxed, your mind is calm.

Four… you’re feeling more compassionate, kind, and caring towards others.

Three… you’re imagining yourself showing empathy and understanding towards all living beings.

Two… you’re feeling a deep sense of connection with others.

One… you’re ready to cultivate compassion in your daily life. Open your eyes, feeling refreshed and renewed.”

Post-Hypnotic Suggestions

“From now on, whenever you encounter someone in need, you’ll remember to show compassion and kindness. You’ll trust that you have the ability to make a positive impact in their life, and that your compassion will bring comfort and relief.

You’ll prioritize building strong, supportive relationships with others, and you’ll cultivate a sense of empathy and understanding in all your interactions.

Remember, compassion is a muscle that can be developed with practice and patience. You will continue to grow and develop in your ability to show compassion to yourself and others.”
