Understanding and see these biases for what they do to us and what they are is very helpful in learning how they can lead us to poor decisions in life.

Induction:

“As you approach this light, imagine a gentle, soothing breeze blowing, softening the light and revealing the complexity of the forest. This breeze represents your inner desire for open-mindedness and uncertainty. Feel the breeze growing stronger, blowing away the illusion of certainty and revealing a more nuanced, more humble perspective.

Reframing and Reprocessing:

Notice how you’ve been looking back at past events and thinking ‘I knew it all along.’ Reframe these thoughts and patterns as opportunities for growth, learning, and improvement. See how you’ve been limiting yourself, and how you can break free from these constraints.

Anchoring and Future Pacing:

Closing:

Imagine yourself in a peaceful, serene environment, where everything feels calm and relaxed. With each breath, feel your body relaxing further, letting go of any tension or stress.

Now, imagine a bright, warm light filling your body, starting at the crown of your head, flowing down through your face, neck, and shoulders, down to your chest, abdomen, lower back, and finally, to your toes. This warm light represents relaxation, calmness, and clarity.

As you continue to breathe deeply, allow this warm light to fill every cell of your body, soothing any areas of tension or discomfort. You’re becoming more relaxed, more calm, and more focused with each passing moment.”

Deepening

“Now, I’d like you to imagine yourself descending a gentle stairway, with each step, feeling yourself becoming more relaxed, more calm, and more focused. With each step, repeat the phrase, ‘I am relaxing, I am calm, I am focused’… (pause) 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.

You’re now at a depth of relaxation where your subconscious mind is open to positive suggestions and changes. Take a deep breath in, and as you exhale, feel any remaining tension or stress leaving your body.”

Removing the Hindsight Bias

“Imagine a pair of glasses, representing the lens of hindsight, perched on the bridge of your nose. These glasses have been distorting your view of past events, making you think that the outcome was obvious, and that you should have known better.

As you exhale, imagine these glasses becoming foggy, and then, suddenly, they disappear, allowing you to see the past in a new, clear light. You’re now able to recognize that the past is the past, and that it’s impossible to know the outcome of events with certainty.

Imagine a voice whispering in your ear, ‘I did the best I could with the information I had at the time. I’m kind to myself, and I acknowledge that uncertainty is a natural part of life.’

Repeat after me: ‘I am free from the hindsight bias. I see the past clearly, and I’m gentle with myself.'”

Visualization

“Imagine yourself in a situation where you’re tempted to say, ‘I knew it all along.’ Stop, take a deep breath, and remind yourself that you’re looking at the past through the lens of hindsight.

Visualize yourself being kind to yourself, acknowledging that you made the best decision you could with the information you had at the time. See yourself smiling, feeling a sense of self-compassion, and understanding.

Remember, this feeling of self-compassion and clarity is yours, and it will stay with you long after this session is over.”

Awakening

“Now, as you slowly begin to return to a state of full awareness, take a deep breath in, and as you exhale, feel refreshed, renewed, and ready to approach life’s challenges with a clearer perspective.

When you open your eyes, you’ll feel more confident, more compassionate, and more inclined to view the past with accuracy and understanding.
