This test is not a measure of your ability to be hypnotized, but rather a demonstration of your suggestibility to hypnotic suggestions.

Here is a sample script for a hypnotherapy suggestibility test:

Introduction

“Welcome to this suggestibility test. The purpose of this test is to help us determine how receptive you are to hypnotic suggestions. Please find a comfortable position, close your eyes, and take a deep breath in through your nose and out through your mouth. Allow yourself to relax and let go of any tension or distractions.”

Test 1: Arm Levitation

“Imagine that your arm, from the shoulder down to the fingertips, is becoming light and floaty. As I count from one to five, your arm will begin to lift off your lap or the armrest. It will rise up into the air, feeling lighter and lighter with each number. One…your arm is starting to feel a gentle tingling sensation. Two…your arm is getting lighter, more buoyant. Three…your arm is lifting, rising up into the air. Four…your arm is floating, weightless and free. Five…your arm is suspended in mid-air, completely relaxed and at ease.

Observe your arm, notice how it’s responding to my suggestions. When you’re ready, you can slowly lower your arm back down to a comfortable position.”

Test 2: Eye Closure

“Imagine that your eyelids are becoming heavy, like lead weights are attached to them. As I count from one to five, your eyelids will grow heavier and heavier, making it more and more difficult to keep your eyes open. One…your eyelids are starting to feel the weight. Two…your eyelids are getting heavier, drooping downward. Three…your eyelids are struggling to stay open. Four…your eyelids are almost too heavy to keep open. Five…your eyelids are closed, shut tight, and completely relaxed.

Notice how your eyes feel, how relaxed and calm they are. Take a deep breath and enjoy the sensation of deep relaxation.”

Test 3: Finger Spreading

“Imagine that your fingers, on both hands, are becoming stiff and rigid. As I count from one to five, your fingers will begin to spread apart, stretching and extending to their fullest capacity. One…your fingers are starting to stiffen. Two…your fingers are getting stiffer, beginning to spread apart. Three…your fingers are spreading wider, stretching and extending. Four…your fingers are almost fully extended. Five…your fingers are fully stretched, rigid and straight.

Observe your fingers, notice how they’re responding to my suggestions. When you’re ready, you can slowly relax your fingers back to a comfortable position.”

Conclusion

“Take a deep breath in, and as you exhale, you can slowly open your eyes. Notice how you’re feeling, how relaxed and calm you are. This test is not a measure of your ability to be hypnotized, but rather a demonstration of your suggestibility to hypnotic suggestions. The more responsive you were to these suggestions, the more likely you are to benefit from hypnotherapy sessions.”
