After an induction has helped a client relax, a deepener is used to guide them into an even deeper state of focused attention and receptivity.
1. Descending Elevator Deepener
“You are doing very well.
In a moment, imagine that you are stepping into a comfortable elevator. The doors close gently, and you notice a panel with the numbers 10 down to 1.
As the elevator begins to descend, you can allow yourself to relax twice as deeply with each number.
10… going deeper.
9… more comfortable.
8… letting go completely.
7… deeper and deeper.
6… calm and peaceful.
5… halfway down now.
4… feeling wonderfully relaxed.
3… drifting comfortably deeper.
2… almost there.
1… deeply relaxed.
The elevator comes to a gentle stop. The doors open, and you step into a place of complete peace and comfort.
Every sound you hear helps you relax even more. Every breath takes you deeper into this pleasant state.”
2. Floating Cloud Deepener
“Imagine yourself resting on a soft, comfortable cloud.
The cloud supports you perfectly and effortlessly.
With every breath, the cloud gently drifts downward through a peaceful blue sky.
As it drifts lower, you feel more relaxed.
With each breath in, calm fills your body.
With each breath out, tension leaves completely.
Imagine a gentle wave of relaxation flowing from the top of your head down to your toes.
Each wave doubles your comfort and relaxation.
Deeper and deeper… calmer and calmer.
Your mind becomes quiet and peaceful.
Your body feels pleasantly heavy and relaxed.
You may even find that time seems less important now as you continue drifting deeper into comfort, safety, and peace.”
Tips for Effective Deepeners
Use a slow, calm speaking pace.
Pause frequently to allow the experience to develop.
Use imagery that feels safe and pleasant.
Repeat phrases such as “deeper and deeper” or “more relaxed with every breath.”
Engage multiple senses (sight, sound, feeling) to strengthen focus.
A common sequence in hypnotherapy is:
Pre-talk → Induction → Deepener → Therapeutic Suggestions → Reorientation/Awakening.
