Case Study: HS – 11 Year Old Boy – Bedwetting – Hypnotherapy Treatment Session 1

Client Information:

* Name: HS

* Age: 11

* Gender: Male

* presenting issue: Bedwetting (Nocturnal Enuresis)

* Medical History: None

* Family History: Father had bedwetting issues as a child

* Treatment Goals: Reduce/eliminate bedwetting episodes

Session 1:

Introduction and Assessment (10 minutes)

The client, HS, and his SW attended the session. The SW reported that HS has been experiencing bedwetting episodes 2-3 times a week, with no discernible pattern or trigger. HS has been feeling embarrassed and anxious about the issue, which has affected his self-esteem. The SW has tried various strategies, including limiting fluids before bedtime and waking HS up during the night to use the bathroom, but with limited success.

Hypnotherapy Session (30 minutes)

The hypnotherapy session began with a relaxation induction, using progressive muscle relaxation and deep breathing techniques. HS was asked to imagine himself in a safe, comfortable place, where he could relax and let go of any worries or concerns.

Deepening Techniques:

* Counting technique: HS was asked to imagine himself counting down from 10, feeling more relaxed with each number.

* Visualization: HS was guided to imagine a peaceful, serene environment, such as a beach or a forest, where he could feel calm and relaxed.

Therapeutic Suggestions:

* HS was told that his body has the ability to learn and adapt, and that he can train his bladder to hold urine during the night.

* HS was suggested to imagine himself waking up feeling dry and confident, with a sense of accomplishment and pride.

* HS was told that he can learn to recognize the sensations in his body that signal the need to urinate, and that he can respond to these sensations by getting out of bed and using the bathroom.

Post-Hypnotic Suggestions:

* HS was given a post-hypnotic suggestion to repeat to himself before bedtime: “I am in control of my body, and I can stay dry throughout the night.”

* HS was also given a suggestion to imagine himself feeling confident and proud of himself for staying dry, which would reinforce positive self-esteem and motivation.

Conclusion and Homework (10 minutes)

The session concluded with a discussion of the client’s experience and any insights gained during the session. HS reported feeling more relaxed and calm, and his mother noted that he seemed more confident and motivated. The following homework was assigned:

* HS was asked to practice the relaxation techniques and deep breathing exercises twice a day, for 10-15 minutes each time.

* HS was encouraged to keep a journal to track his progress, including any bedwetting episodes and any factors that may have contributed to them.

* HS was asked to repeat the post-hypnotic suggestions to himself before bedtime, to reinforce the positive messages and build confidence.

Next Session:

The next session will focus on building on the progress made in the first session, and introducing new techniques to help HS manage his bedwetting. The goal is to reduce the frequency of bedwetting episodes and increase HS’s confidence and self-esteem.

Hypnotherapy Plan:

The hypnotherapy plan will involve 4-6 sessions, spaced one week apart. Each session will build on the previous one, introducing new techniques and reinforcing positive messages. The goals of the plan are to:

* Reduce the frequency of bedwetting episodes

* Increase HS’s confidence and self-esteem

* Teach HS skills to manage his bedwetting, such as recognizing sensations and responding to them

* Provide HS with a sense of control and empowerment
