Dharma Therapy Healing with Clinical Hypnotherapy Session 4 of 6 (Cognitive Transformation)

Dharma Therapy Healing with Clinical Hypnotherapy™

Session 4: Cognitive Transformation

Full Professional Hypnotherapy Session

Theme: “Transforming the Mind, Transforming the Life”

Duration: 60–90 Minutes

Primary Goal:
To help the client identify and reshape limiting beliefs, negative self-talk, automatic thoughts, and cognitive distortions while strengthening healthier, more balanced thinking through clinical hypnotherapy, guided imagery, cognitive restructuring, and future-oriented visualization.

Clinical Note: This professional script is intended for use by appropriately trained hypnotherapists. Hypnosis is used to complement—not replace—evidence-informed cognitive and behavioural interventions. The goal is not to convince clients that every thought is false or positive, but to help them evaluate thoughts realistically, develop cognitive flexibility, and choose more adaptive ways of thinking.

Session Objectives

By the end of today’s session, the client will begin to:

  • Recognise automatic thinking patterns.
  • Identify limiting beliefs.
  • Reduce negative self-talk.
  • Replace cognitive distortions with balanced perspectives.
  • Build confidence in making healthier mental choices.
  • Strengthen emotional resilience.

Session Structure

  1. Welcome and Review (10 Minutes)
  2. Psychoeducation (10 Minutes)
  3. Hypnotic Induction (10–15 Minutes)
  4. Deepening (5 Minutes)
  5. Cognitive Transformation Journey (30 Minutes)
  6. Future Mental Rehearsal (10 Minutes)
  7. Awakening (5 Minutes)
  8. Debrief and Homework (10 Minutes)

Part 1 – Welcome

“Welcome back.

Over the past three sessions, you have learned to become aware of yourself, to practice acceptance, and to begin healing emotionally.

Today we explore another powerful aspect of healing…

your thinking.

Every day your mind creates thousands of thoughts.

Some encourage you.

Some protect you.

Some are simply habits that developed over many years.

Not every thought represents reality.

Some thoughts are old stories.

Some are fears.

Some are assumptions.

Today you begin learning that you can observe your thoughts, question them with curiosity, and choose healthier ways of responding.”

Part 2 – Psychoeducation

Discuss:

The Thinking–Feeling–Behaviour Cycle

Explain that:

  • Thoughts influence emotions.
  • Emotions influence behaviour.
  • Behaviour reinforces beliefs.
  • Beliefs shape future thoughts.

Changing habitual thinking can influence emotions and actions over time.

Common Cognitive Distortions

Introduce examples such as:

  • All-or-nothing thinking
  • Catastrophising
  • Mind reading
  • Fortune telling
  • Overgeneralisation
  • Emotional reasoning
  • Labelling
  • Personalisation
  • Discounting positives

Emphasise that everyone experiences thinking biases from time to time.

Part 3 – Hypnotic Induction

“Please make yourself comfortable.

Allow your hands to rest peacefully.

Take a slow comfortable breath in…

and slowly breathe out.

Again…

breathing in peace…

breathing out every unnecessary tension.

As your breathing settles into its own comfortable rhythm…

allow your eyes to gently close.

Imagine a gentle wave of comfort flowing from the top of your head…

down across your forehead…

around your eyes…

through your cheeks…

your jaw…

your neck…

your shoulders…

your arms…

your hands…

through your chest…

your abdomen…

your hips…

your legs…

all the way to your feet.

Every breath relaxes you a little more.

Every moment allows your mind to become quieter.

Calmer.

More focused.

More peaceful.”

(Pause)

Progressive Relaxation

“Imagine your body becoming pleasantly heavy.

Your breathing effortless.

Your thoughts becoming slower.

Like clouds drifting across a beautiful blue sky.”

(Pause)

Deepening

“I shall count from ten down to one.

With each number…

your body relaxes more deeply.

10…

9…

8…

drifting comfortably…

7…

6…

deeper…

5…

calm…

4…

peaceful…

3…

relaxed…

2…

comfortable…

1…

deeply relaxed.”

The Library of the Mind

“Imagine yourself standing before a beautiful library.

This library contains every thought you have ever had.

Every belief.

Every memory.

Every lesson.

You notice that each shelf contains books.

Some books contain wisdom.

Some contain outdated ideas that no longer serve you.

Today you are here to reorganise your library.”

(Pause)

Identifying Limiting Beliefs

“You notice an old book labelled:

‘I am not good enough.’

Perhaps another says:

‘I always fail.’

Or…

‘I am unlovable.’

‘I cannot change.’

‘I will never succeed.’

You gently remove these books from the shelf.

Notice they have become worn with age.

These beliefs may once have tried to protect you.

But they no longer describe who you are becoming.

Thank them for the role they once played.

Then gently place them into a basket marked:

‘Lessons Learned.’

You no longer need to carry them as absolute truths.”

(Pause)

Releasing Negative Self-Talk

“Now imagine hearing your inner voice.

Notice how it speaks to you.

If it has been harsh…

critical…

or discouraging…

imagine adjusting the volume until it becomes softer.

Kinder.

More supportive.

Now allow that inner voice to say:

‘I am learning.’

‘I can grow.’

‘I do not have to be perfect.’

‘I am capable of making progress.’

‘I deserve patience while I learn.’

Notice how different your mind feels when kindness replaces criticism.”

(Pause)

Transforming Automatic Thoughts

“Imagine standing beside a gently flowing stream.

Every automatic thought appears as a leaf floating upon the water.

Some thoughts are helpful.

Some are not.

Instead of grabbing every leaf…

you simply watch them pass.

You realise:

Not every thought requires your attention.

Not every thought deserves your belief.

You are free to notice a thought without obeying it.”

(Pause)

Correcting Cognitive Distortions

“Now imagine a beautiful crystal-clear mirror.

This mirror reflects reality with balance and honesty.

Whenever an exaggerated thought appears…

hold it before the mirror.

Notice how the mirror gently transforms it.

‘I always fail.’

becomes…

‘Sometimes I succeed, sometimes I learn.’

‘Nobody likes me.’

becomes…

‘Some people appreciate me, and relationships can grow.’

‘I cannot cope.’

becomes…

‘I have overcome challenges before, and I can develop new coping skills.’

‘Everything will go wrong.’

becomes…

‘I cannot predict the future, and I can respond to whatever happens.’

Each balanced thought strengthens your confidence.”

(Pause)

Installing Healthy Core Beliefs

“Now imagine placing beautiful new books upon the shelves.

Their titles read:

‘I am worthy.’

‘I am resilient.’

‘I continue learning.’

‘I make progress one step at a time.’

‘I can solve problems.’

‘I choose growth.’

‘I trust my ability to learn.’

‘I respond thoughtfully.’

‘I deserve kindness.’

‘I create my future through today’s choices.’

Notice your library becoming brighter.

Lighter.

Organised.

Peaceful.”

(Pause)

Wisdom Garden

“You now walk into a peaceful garden.

Each healthy belief becomes a beautiful tree.

The more often you practise balanced thinking…

the stronger these trees become.

Every helpful thought nourishes the garden.

Every act of self-compassion helps it flourish.

Your mind becomes a place of growth rather than fear.”

(Pause)

Future Mental Rehearsal

“Now imagine yourself tomorrow.

A difficult situation appears.

For just a moment…

an old thought begins to arise.

But this time something different happens.

You pause.

You breathe.

You ask yourself:

Is this thought completely accurate?

Is there another balanced way to see this situation?

Immediately your mind offers a calmer perspective.

You respond wisely.

Confidently.

Thoughtfully.

Notice how peaceful this feels.

Every day this becomes easier.

Every day your new way of thinking grows stronger.”

(Pause)

Ego Strengthening

“Your mind is becoming your ally.

Every day you notice healthier thoughts more easily.

You question old beliefs with wisdom rather than fear.

You treat yourself with kindness.

You trust your ability to learn.

You become mentally stronger.

Emotionally calmer.

Increasingly resilient.

You are no longer controlled by automatic thoughts.

You choose which thoughts deserve your attention.”

Therapeutic Suggestions

“From today forward…

  • You naturally notice unhelpful thinking patterns.
  • You pause before believing every automatic thought.
  • Your inner dialogue becomes kinder and more encouraging.
  • You recognise your strengths more easily.
  • You think with greater balance and flexibility.
  • You become increasingly confident in your ability to solve problems.
  • Every day your mind becomes calmer, clearer, and wiser.

These suggestions support your goals and remain under your control. You will accept only those that are consistent with your wellbeing and intentions.”

Future Self Visualization

“Now imagine yourself one year from today.

Notice your posture.

Your confidence.

The calmness in your face.

You think clearly.

You make thoughtful decisions.

You speak kindly to yourself.

Challenges no longer control your life.

Instead…

they become opportunities for learning and growth.

See yourself smiling.

Living with confidence.

Purpose.

Inner peace.

Allow this future version of yourself to simply say:

‘Keep going.

You are becoming who you were always capable of becoming.’

Take a moment to absorb that feeling.”

(Pause)

Reorientation

“In a few moments…

I shall count from one to five.

Returning refreshed.

Confident.

Mentally clear.

Emotionally balanced.

1…

bringing awareness back.

2…

energy returning.

3…

feeling refreshed.

4…

taking a deep comfortable breath.

5…

eyes open…

fully awake…

calm…

alert…

feeling positive.”

Post-Session Reflection

Invite the client to discuss:

  • Which limiting belief stood out most today?
  • Was there a balanced thought that felt particularly meaningful?
  • What changes did you notice in your inner dialogue during the session?
  • How did it feel to imagine yourself responding differently?
  • Which new belief would you like to strengthen this week?

Normalize that changing long-standing thinking patterns takes practice and repetition rather than expecting immediate perfection.

Weekly Homework

Daily Cognitive Awareness Practice (10–15 Minutes)

Each day:

  1. Notice one automatic thought.
  2. Ask yourself:
    • Is this thought completely true?
    • What evidence supports it?
    • What evidence does not support it?
    • What is a more balanced perspective?
  3. Replace the original thought with a realistic, compassionate alternative.

Daily Affirmations

Repeat slowly each morning:

  • I am learning every day.
  • I choose balanced thinking.
  • I respond thoughtfully rather than automatically.
  • My worth is not determined by one mistake.
  • Every challenge teaches me something valuable.
  • I trust my ability to grow.
  • My thoughts influence my choices, and my choices shape my future.

Evening Reflection Journal

Write briefly about:

  • One limiting belief you noticed today.
  • One balanced replacement thought.
  • One situation where you responded differently than before.
  • One personal strength you recognised in yourself.
  • One positive action you will take tomorrow.

Session Outcome

By the completion of Session 4, clients should begin to:

  • Recognise limiting beliefs and cognitive distortions more readily.
  • Develop a more compassionate and realistic inner dialogue.
  • Respond to automatic thoughts with curiosity rather than unquestioning acceptance.
  • Increase confidence in their ability to think flexibly and solve problems.
  • Build a stronger mental foundation for the next stage of the programme: Session 5 – Purpose (Dharma): Discovering Values, Meaning, and Life Direction, where healthier thinking is translated into purposeful, values-based living.

Dharma Therapy Healing with Clinical Hypnotherapy Session 3 of 6 (Emotional Healing)

Dharma Therapy Healing with Clinical Hypnotherapy™

Session 3: Emotional Healing

Full Professional Hypnotherapy Session

Theme: “Healing the Emotional Heart”

Duration: 60–90 Minutes

Primary Goal:
To help the client safely recognise, process, and respond to difficult emotions—including fear, anxiety, shame, guilt, anger, grief, and emotional overwhelm—using evidence-informed therapeutic principles, clinical hypnotherapy, guided imagery, and coping rehearsals. The emphasis is on increasing emotional regulation, resilience, and self-compassion rather than reliving distressing events.

Clinical Note: This professional script is intended for use by appropriately trained hypnotherapists. It should be adapted to the client’s history, goals, emotional readiness, and cultural context. The session focuses on emotional regulation and present-day coping rather than recovering memories or attempting to verify past events. If trauma symptoms become overwhelming or the client shows signs of dissociation or significant distress, return to grounding techniques, remain within the client’s window of tolerance, and consider referral or collaboration with appropriate mental health professionals.

Session Objectives

By the end of today’s session, the client will begin to:

  • Recognise emotions without becoming overwhelmed.
  • Understand that emotions are temporary internal experiences.
  • Reduce fear of difficult emotions.
  • Develop emotional resilience.
  • Strengthen self-compassion.
  • Increase confidence in managing emotional challenges.

Session Structure

  1. Welcome and Review (10 minutes)
  2. Psychoeducation (10 minutes)
  3. Hypnotic Induction (10–15 minutes)
  4. Deepening (5–10 minutes)
  5. Emotional Healing Journey (25–30 minutes)
  6. Future Coping Rehearsal (10 minutes)
  7. Awakening (5 minutes)
  8. Debrief and Homework (10 minutes)

Part 1 – Welcome

“Welcome back.

During our previous sessions, you learned to become aware of your inner world and to approach yourself with greater acceptance.

Today we take another important step.

Today we begin emotional healing.

Every emotion has served a purpose.

Some emotions protected you.

Some warned you.

Some helped you survive difficult times.

Today we are not trying to erase emotions.

Instead, we are learning how to understand them, respond to them wisely, and allow them to move through us without controlling our lives.”

Part 2 – Psychoeducation

Discuss:

Understanding Emotions

Explain that emotions are:

  • Normal human experiences.
  • Temporary rather than permanent.
  • Signals that provide information.
  • Influenced by thoughts, physical sensations, behaviours, and life experiences.

Emotional Regulation

Introduce the concept that emotional regulation involves:

  • Recognising emotions.
  • Naming emotions.
  • Accepting emotions.
  • Choosing helpful responses.

Clarify that healing does not mean never feeling sadness, fear, or anger; it means becoming better able to navigate these experiences.

Part 3 – Hypnotic Induction

“Please make yourself comfortable.

Allow your eyes to close whenever they naturally wish to.

Take a slow deep breath in…

and gently breathe out.

Again…

breathing in calm…

breathing out tension.

With every breath…

your body becomes more relaxed.

Imagine a warm light beginning above your head.

This light represents calmness.

Safety.

Healing.

As this light slowly moves downward…

your forehead relaxes…

your eyes soften…

your jaw loosens…

your neck releases all unnecessary tension.

The light continues through your shoulders…

your arms…

your chest…

your abdomen…

your hips…

your legs…

all the way to your feet.

You are safe.

You are supported.

You are completely comfortable.”

(Pause)

Progressive Relaxation

“Every breath carries peace throughout your body.

Every exhalation releases tension.

Every sound around you simply helps you relax even more deeply.

Allow your mind to become calm…

like still water reflecting a clear sky.”

(Pause)

Deepening

“I will now count slowly from ten down to one.

Each number allows your mind to become more peaceful.

10…

9…

8…

drifting comfortably…

7…

6…

deeper…

5…

calm…

4…

safe…

3…

peaceful…

2…

relaxed…

1…

deeply comfortable.”

Healing Sanctuary

“Imagine yourself walking along a peaceful forest path.

The air is fresh.

The sunlight gently filters through the trees.

You arrive at a beautiful sanctuary.

This place exists only for healing.

Nothing here can harm you.

You are completely safe.

You are completely supported.”

(Pause)

Emotional Healing Journey

Meeting Fear

“In this sanctuary…

imagine Fear standing before you.

Notice that Fear is no longer overwhelming.

It simply wishes to protect you.

Gently thank Fear for trying to keep you safe.

Then say quietly:

‘I appreciate your intention.

I no longer need to live in constant fear.

I choose courage.

I choose wisdom.

I choose calm.’

Notice Fear becoming smaller…

lighter…

less powerful…

as confidence quietly grows within you.”

(Pause)

Meeting Anxiety

“Now imagine Anxiety.

Rather than fighting Anxiety…

simply notice it.

Take one slow breath.

Then another.

Watch Anxiety becoming like mist that slowly disappears as the morning sun rises.

Every breath creates more space.

More calm.

More balance.

Repeat quietly:

‘I can breathe through this moment.

I can respond with calm.

I trust my ability to cope.’

(Pause)

Meeting Shame

“Now gently notice Shame.

Perhaps it has convinced you that you were never enough.

Look at Shame with kindness.

Say quietly:

‘My mistakes do not define my worth.

My struggles do not determine my value.

I am learning.

I am growing.

I deserve compassion.’

Notice Shame beginning to dissolve in the warm healing light surrounding you.”

(Pause)

Meeting Guilt

“Now imagine Guilt.

If there are things you wish had been different…

acknowledge them gently.

Ask yourself:

What have I learned?

How have I grown?

How can I make wise choices moving forward?

Allow Guilt to transform into wisdom.

Wisdom stays.

The unnecessary burden begins to fade.”

(Pause)

Meeting Anger

“Now become aware of Anger.

Notice its energy.

Its intensity.

Without judging it…

allow Anger to become a warm fire contained safely within a fireplace.

Its energy can provide warmth.

Its energy can provide strength.

You choose how to use it.

Say quietly:

‘I choose calm strength over uncontrolled reaction.’

(Pause)

Meeting Grief

“Now gently notice Grief.

Grief is often the expression of love after loss.

Allow yourself to acknowledge whatever sadness may be present.

Imagine placing your hands over your heart.

With every breath…

allow compassion to surround your heart.

You do not need to rush healing.

Healing unfolds one breath…

one day…

one step at a time.”

(Pause)

Emotional Overwhelm

“Imagine all your emotions becoming colourful leaves floating gently upon a peaceful river.

Each leaf represents one feeling.

You no longer need to carry every leaf.

You simply observe them floating by.

Some stay longer.

Some drift away quickly.

Every emotion continues moving.

Nothing remains forever.

You are not your emotions.

You are the calm observer of your emotional experience.”

(Pause)

Healing Light

“Now imagine a beautiful golden light surrounding your entire body.

This healing light gently fills every part of you with peace.

Calm.

Compassion.

Strength.

Balance.

As this light fills your heart…

you become more emotionally resilient.

You trust yourself.

You believe in your ability to cope.

You become stronger with every experience.”

(Pause)

Coping Rehearsal

“Now imagine yourself during the coming week.

Perhaps an emotional situation arises.

This time something is different.

You notice your emotions.

You breathe slowly.

You pause before reacting.

You respond thoughtfully.

You remember that emotions are temporary.

You remain calm.

Balanced.

Present.

Notice how confident you feel.

This becomes your new pattern.”

(Pause)

Ego Strengthening

“Every day your emotional resilience grows stronger.

You are learning to understand your emotions instead of fearing them.

You are becoming calmer.

More confident.

More compassionate.

More emotionally balanced.

Your heart is healing.

Your mind is becoming peaceful.

Your inner strength continues growing.”

Therapeutic Suggestions

“From today forward:

  • You recognise your emotions with greater clarity.
  • You allow emotions to come and go naturally.
  • You respond thoughtfully rather than reacting automatically.
  • You become increasingly calm during emotional situations.
  • Your confidence grows every day.
  • Your emotional resilience strengthens with each experience.
  • You treat yourself with patience, kindness, and compassion.

These suggestions support your goals and remain under your control. You will accept only those that are consistent with your wellbeing and intentions.”

Future Self

“Imagine yourself six months from today.

Notice how peaceful you appear.

How confident.

How emotionally balanced.

Notice yourself responding wisely to challenges.

Smiling more easily.

Feeling lighter.

Living with greater freedom.

Know that today’s work becomes one step along that journey.”

(Pause)

Reorientation

“In a few moments…

I shall count from one to five.

Returning refreshed.

Balanced.

Calm.

1…

bringing awareness back.

2…

energy returning.

3…

feeling refreshed.

4…

taking a comfortable deep breath.

5…

eyes open…

fully awake…

calm…

alert…

feeling peaceful.”

Post-Session Reflection

Invite the client to explore:

  • Which emotion felt easiest to acknowledge today?
  • Which emotion was most difficult?
  • What did you notice about your body’s response during the session?
  • Which coping strategy felt most helpful?
  • What would you like to continue practising this week?

Reinforce that emotional healing is gradual and that increased awareness and regulation are signs of progress, even when difficult emotions still arise.

Weekly Homework

Daily Emotional Awareness Practice (10–15 Minutes)

  1. Spend five minutes focusing on your breathing.
  2. Identify and name any emotions you notice.
  3. Ask yourself:
    • What might this emotion be telling me?
    • What do I need right now?
  4. Respond with a compassionate statement, such as:
    • “This emotion is temporary.”
    • “I can meet this moment with kindness.”
    • “I have coped before, and I can cope again.”

Emotional Reflection Journal

Each evening, write briefly about:

  • The strongest emotion you experienced today.
  • What triggered it.
  • How you responded.
  • What helped you regulate it.
  • One thing you appreciated about yourself today.

Session Outcome

By the conclusion of Session 3, clients should begin to:

  • Recognise and name emotions more accurately.
  • Feel less threatened by fear, anxiety, shame, guilt, anger, grief, and emotional overwhelm.
  • Apply calming strategies before reacting.
  • Develop greater emotional resilience and self-compassion.
  • Strengthen confidence in their ability to manage life’s emotional challenges.

This session provides the emotional foundation for Session 4: Cognitive Transformation, where clients learn to identify and reshape limiting beliefs and unhelpful thinking patterns that contribute to ongoing emotional distress.
