How to Meditate on the Chakras

In Hindu yogic philosophy, chakras are the invisible energy centres of the human body, and blockage in these areas may connect to physical and emotional issues.

To help unblock the chakras you can do the following meditation, using the Western adaptation of the chakra system.

Know your chakras. Chakras are compared to discs that lie horizontally in your body and spin. They correspond with different glands and their hormones, so some traditions say that there are actually more than seven Chakras according to the number of glands in the human body.

Each Chakra bears so many attributes that they can’t be listed here, so here’s just a short overview:

  • Muladhara Chakra – Root Chakra – Alchemy of Stability and your Earth Energy. Truth is, we all benefit from having more of an Earth personality. Characteristics include stability, reliability, and thoughtfulness.
  • Swadhishthana Chakra – Sacral Chakra – This is the Houses Creativity, Relationships, and Sexuality. Being creative in nature, this chakra’s main focus is allowing the individual to discover what they enjoy, to form hobbies, create loving and exciting relationships, and even creativity in lovemaking and sexual eroticism.
  • Manipura Chakra – Solar Plexus Chakra – The chakra, is our epicenter and the magnetic core of our personality and our ego. It relates to the energy of the sun and is our very own personal, fiery furnace.
  • Anahata Chakra – Heart Chakra – This chakra colours your life with beauty, love, and compassion. It is motivated by the principles of integration and transformation, the heart chakra bridges earthly and spiritual aspirations. It is associated with the heart chakra involve your love for yourself and for others. This is the chakra that governs how you relate to people and how you handle relationships.
  • Vishuddha Chakra – Throat Chakra – The Throat Center, the communication chakra located at the throat, is associated with the color blue and with the space element. The qualities of this chakra are communication, truth, and self-expression.
  • Ajna Chakra – Third Eye Chakra – This chakra is associated with vision and intuition. It’s responsible for the perception of movements of energy and subtle dimensions. The third eye chakra is also associated with psychic abilities, specifically clairaudience and clairvoyance.
  • Sahastrara Chakra – Crown Chakra – It relates to your awareness of your higher consciousness and wisdom, as well as to your connection to your spirituality. This chakra represents your connection with the formless and with the limitless, and your integration with your highest self.

Choose the correct environment. Make yourself comfy in a room or a place outside where you are alone and where it is silent (aside from natural sounds). Switch off your phone and your door bell so you won’t get disturbed. Make sure your clothes aren’t too tight or scratchy. Close your eyes so you can concentrate on your body.

Relax. Some experts recommend to stand up during this meditation, but you may as well lie down on a blanket or sit on a cushion. Take deep slow breaths and relax your muscles.

Go through the chakras from bottom to top. This is necessary to determine which chakra is blocked or otherwise not alright. Sometimes it’s obvious beforehand, but some issues can be related to different chakras. Always start with the root chakra and end with the crown chakra as this means going from the most “primitive” part of the body (survival) to the highest developed one (consciousness).

Re-energize each chakra. Imagine the chakra as discs or lotus flowers. Breathe in and visualize light flowing into the chakra, making it glow with energy. Breathe out and imagine all your stress flowing out of the chakra. Repeat if necessary, then move on to the next chakra.

Align chakras. In the simplest terms, aligning chakras means getting them all to rotate clockwise. A chakra that stops spinning or spins the wrong way could be associated with physical ailments, or with telling lies. One way to re-align a chakra like this is to meditate and visualize it turning clockwise, correcting the flow through your body.

Come back slowly. After energizing the crown chakra, continue taking deep breaths. Open your eyes slowly and calmly return to your everyday life.

Method

The Deep General Approach

Chakra meditation can be pretty daunting at first for the beginner. If you feel you need guidance on it first before you can do it on your own, you should consider getting guided chakra meditation from apps, online meditation websites or even podcasts. But remember to use resources from trust-able and reliable sources so as to lean how it is done the right way. Here is a simple and easy way to do chakra meditation.

Get fairly comfortable. Look for a quiet and fairly comfortable place where you won’t be disturbed. Sit with an erect spine and cross your legs in front of you. Place your hands loosely on your knees. If that feels too much to do, use a meditation cushion.

Take deep breaths. With your eyes closed, breathe in and out in a much deeper way to help you relax and focus.

Focus on your chakras. Starting with the root chakra all the way to the crown chakra, create a mental image of an energy center that has energy flowing through it. Make sure you understand each of the chakras in terms of the colors they are associated with.

Take your time with each chakra. Give yourself enough time with each chakra and ensure in your visualization, you see energy moving and flowing through.

See the whole chakra system in action. Go through each chakra doing the same and once you are done with all of them, visualize the whole chakra system and see energy flowing from the root chakra to the crown chakra seamlessly while leaving an effect in your body.

End your meditation session. Now as you come to a close, slowly open your eyes and take note of your feelings and the energy in your body.

Benefits of Chakra Meditation

With chakra meditation, you are actively participating with your whole body, exploring its layers on a healing level and witnessing the effects of thoughts and feelings.

This must be very personal practice, when done with faith you should expect a sense of contentment, peace and heightened charges of energy. You should sleep better and have a greater connection to your sense of self.

Think of your chakras like a tool kit. You have to keep your tools sharp and on point to use them to their best ability. In life, when bad or negative events occur, working on these points regularly will allow you to draw quickly on the tool that’s most appropriate.

How to Do Chakra Meditation

So how does one perform a chakra meditation?

It really depends on the person and meditation changes with each sitting.

If you’re a visual person, I would suggest using the colours associated with each chakra as a focal point. For others, it’s easier to place a hand at each point to understand how they feel and to focus the attention on these points whilst guiding through the meditation.

Remember that mediation does not necessarily require closed eyes, this is used as a means to soften the mind and help you focus, but take for example candle meditation. You would sit open-eyed watching the flame throughout, closing the eyes at the end of the practice. So you could have a visual cue of the chakra points before you and as you focus on each point on the visual align it to the point on your own body working from the root to the crown. Once you reach the crown, I would recommend closing your eyes.

If audio is more your forte, guided chakra meditations are blissful, and they often indicate to the positioning and color of each not just the name, so you can use visualization as you move through the meditation.

The Steps

As with any meditation, you can perform it daily or weekly, aim for around 20 minutes each time.

There are two types of chakra meditation I would recommend.

Sit on the floor (my preferred position) or lie flat, and start focusing on your breath.

Close your eyes to pull your attention within.

I would then bring your attention (in your mind’s eye) to the first chakra point: the base, which is your connection to the earth. I would ask that this be shown to me in whichever way is best for me (or you!), be it the color we are taught is associated with it, be it a symbol or a word.

Then I would start to focus on the chakra itself – visualize a wheel spinning; watch the direction of its flow, breathing into the light, the shape, space, just observing and trusting. Watch as your breath expands the light – the brightness of the chakra.

(This is the cleansing; the brighter and more vivid, the better. The mind will try to tell you it is not working but it is.)

Now start to visualize it spinning in a clockwise direction; feel its warmth or coolness. Every breath sent with the intention to expand and cleanse is a powerful source.

Now you move up and repeat at each point, working your way up and up. There is no rush – each chakra is individual. Remember that some will require more love on different days. As you reach your crown chakra, allow yourself in your mind’s eye to step back and witness your whole body.

Scan the whole body – is everything open and aligned? Breathe into every point, and then allow your breath to move from the crown chakra right through to the base and back up again; this feels delicious, as here you have found your flow.

Remember, trust your gut – you will intuitively know where you need to spend more time. Some points will expand with ease, and others will be more resistant, so this is where you come back to work next time.

It’s important to observe because you will witness each time you do the meditation just how different you are by day, by week, by month. This is how you ‘measure’ your results.

The second option is ideal if you want to focus on a specific area that correlates with where you wish to focus emotionally.

Start by focusing on what you really want to concentrate your efforts on and focus on that chakra. Let’s take, for example, expanding your voice.

Here you would need to turn to your throat chakra. You would begin as before but your attention would come directly to the throat (the space just outside your body rather than your tonsils!).

You would then visualize the wheel spinning and enlarging with every breath, and you would add a mantra here: ‘I am willing to release all that binds me, I allow myself to center and flow’.

Know Your Chakras

To perform chakra meditation, it helps to have an understanding of what chakras are.

They are power points of energy on the surface of our body.

These points spin like vortexes, pulling the outer or ‘universal’ energies to our most inner points, in order to align, balance and ease the physical, metaphysical and mental systems in and around the body.
