EFT Tapping (Emotional Freedom Techniques) – Emotionally Focused Therapy Script

Introduction

This EFT Tapping script is designed to help reduce emotional distress, encourage self-acceptance, and promote emotional regulation. It can be used alongside an individual’s broader treatment plan to support relaxation, self-awareness, and healthier emotional responses.

Important Note

For individuals living with bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, psychosis, severe depression, PTSD, or other significant mental health conditions, EFT should be used as a supportive wellbeing technique and not as a replacement for appropriate psychiatric, psychological, or medical treatment. When appropriate, EFT should be integrated with ongoing care provided by qualified healthcare professionals.

Step 1 – Identify the Emotional Challenge

Before beginning, take a slow, deep breath.

Ask yourself:

  • What emotion am I experiencing right now?
  • Where do I feel this emotion in my body?
  • What thoughts are connected to this feeling?
  • How intense is this emotion on a scale from 0 to 10?

Write down your intensity rating.

Step 2 – The Setup Statement (Karate Chop Point)

Tap gently on the side of your hand while repeating three times:

“Even though I am experiencing these difficult thoughts and emotions, I choose to accept myself with kindness, patience, and compassion.”

Alternative statements:

“Even though I have struggled with anxiety, fear, or self-doubt, I choose to remain open to healing.”

“Even though part of me feels overwhelmed, another part of me believes healing is possible.”

Again rate your emotional intensity on a scale from 0 to 10.

Remember that even a small reduction can represent meaningful progress.

Reflection Questions

After completing the tapping session, spend a few minutes reflecting on the following questions:

  1. What emotion feels different now?
  2. Has the intensity changed?
  3. What thoughts have changed?
  4. What did I learn about myself?
  5. What strength did I discover today?
  6. What is one kind thing I can do for myself today?

Daily EFT Practice

For the next four weeks, practise EFT once or twice each day.

  • Self-love
  • Self-esteem
  • Self-worth
  • Confidence
  • Emotional regulation
  • Stress management
  • Anxiety reduction
  • Healthy coping

  • Inner peace

Keep a journal of your emotional intensity before and after each session to help you observe patterns and progress over time.

Final Affirmations

Repeat slowly:

  • I accept myself exactly as I am while continuing to grow.
  • I deserve kindness and compassion.
  • My past does not determine my future.
  • I am stronger than I realise.
  • I choose healthy thoughts and healthy actions.
  • I respond with calm and wisdom.
  • Every day I become more confident.
  • Every day I become more resilient.
  • Every day I move closer to the life I want to create.
  • Healing happens one breath, one choice, and one day at a time.

Clinical Reminder

EFT can be a valuable self-regulation and wellbeing practice. However, if distress increases, symptoms worsen, or experiences such as suicidal thoughts, mania, hallucinations, or severe emotional instability occur, pause the exercise and seek support from an appropriate healthcare professional promptly. EFT is intended to complement comprehensive mental healthcare, not replace it.
